AMCAS Letter of Evaluation/Recommendation Pilot Program

Starting with the 2009 application cycle, AMCAS is implementing a Letter of Evaluation/Recommendation pilot program.  There are 20 schools participating in this pilot program including The University of Arizona College of Medicine. Link here to the list of schools participating in this program.

If one or more of your schools is participating in this new process, you will most likely ALSO be applying to schools that are not in the pilot program.  We still highly recommend that you create your account with the pre-health advising center, submit your letters directly to our office and take advantage of the VirtualEvals system for those schools.  The pilot program schools WILL ACCEPT a VirtualEvals packet so you will have the option of using that packet of letters for all of your schools.

If you are applying to any of the schools participating in the AMCAS pilot program, the steps for sending your letters of recommendation are:

  • Indicate that you will be having a “Committee/Letter Packet” uploaded from VirtualEvals when you complete your AMCAS application. Complete directions for how to do this are found on pages 83-88 in the instruction booklet for the 2009 AMCAS application. To find this booklet, click on “support for 2009” on the AMCAS home page, then find the booklet (it’s the one with 110 pages).
  • You will need to provide our office with your AMCAS letter ID number which is on your AMCAS Letter Request Form that you can print out from the AMCAS site (different number than your AMCAS ID number) We need this number to make sure your letter packet will be matched to your AMCAS application.

  • When all of your letters are in your file (you will check on this through your account with the Pre-Health Advising Center) and you wish to have your VE packet uploaded so that AMCAS will be able to match your VE packet to your application.

  • If you choose to have a letter writer submit a letter directly to AMCAS, the letter writer must include your AMCAS Letter ID number found on your Letter Request Form.

Your application will be processed by AMCAS and sent to medical schools with or without letters. In other words, AMCAS does not "hold" applications until all letters are received.
